Is This It is the debut studio album by American indie rock band The Strokes. Recorded at Transporterraum in New York City, it was produced by Gordon Raphael and was first released on July 30, 2001 in Australia, with RCA Records as the primary label. The record entered the UK Albums Chart at number two and peaked at number 33 on the U.S. Billboard 200, going on to achieve platinum status in several markets. "Hard to Explain", "Last Nite", and "Someday" were released as singles.
For the album, The Strokes strived to capture a simple rock sound that was not significantly enhanced in the studio. Building on the work of their debut EP, The Modern Age, the band members molded compositions largely through live takes during the recording sessions, while lyricist Julian Casablancas continued to detail the lives and relationships of urban youth. Following the completion of Is This It, The Strokes embarked on a promotional world tour before its release. The album's cover photograph courted controversy for being too sexually explicit and was replaced for the U.S. market. The American track listing was also amended in light of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Promoted by the music press for a melodic pop-influenced sound, The Strokes garnered critical acclaim and commercial attention. Is This It was praised for its charisma and rhythm, which often referenced the works of 1970s garage rock bands. The record is considered crucial in the development of other alternative bands and of the post-millennial music industry. It has featured in several publications' lists of the best albums of the 2000s and the best albums of all time.

XTRMNTR is a 2000 album by Primal Scream. In a departure from Primal Scream's earlier hedonistic recordings, the band took a more political stance, attacking government, police, and multinational corporations. A free postcard championing the cause of the "Free Satpal Ram Campaign" and encouraging fans to participate was included with initial copies of the album's UK release.
The album is also notable for being the final LP release on the influential British label Creation Records. The track "Accelerator" was later lifted from the album to become the last single to be released on the label. Although Gary Mounfield joined the band in 1997 and recorded a selection of tracks on the album Vanishing Point, it was the first time he shared songwriting credits with the band and his first full album since his time in The Stone Roses.
The album was extremely well-received, and is recognized as one of the two definitive Primal Scream albums (the other being Screamadelica).
In 2001 Q magazine named it as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time . NME magazine (12/30/00, p. 77) rated the album #2 in its "Top 50 Albums Of The Year 2000".

Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea is an album by English singer-songwriter PJ Harvey, released on 23 October 2000. It became the second major commercial success of PJ Harvey’s career, following her successful 1995 breakthrough To Bring You My Love. The album sold slightly over one million copies worldwide. The album peaked at #42 in the U.S Billboard 200.
Reviews too were exceptionally strong with Rolling Stone praising it as "the best album of her career" and NME hailing it "a magnificent, life-affirming opus" in their 9/10-rated review. According to the music review aggregator Metacritic, it has received an average score of 88 , the 4th highest score of 2000. Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea won the 2001 Mercury Prize, and also brought Harvey BRIT Award nominations as Best British Female Artist for two years running, as well as two Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Female Rock Performance for the single "This Is Love".
It was ranked 8 on Rolling Stone's list of The 50 Essential "Women In Rock" Albums.

In 2009, NME also placed the album inside their Top 100 Greatest Albums Of The Decade, at number 6

Funeral is the debut full-length album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, released on September 14, 2004 in North America by Merge Records and on February 28, 2005 in Europe by Rough Trade Records. It was given its title because several band members had recently lost members of their families: Régine Chassagne's grandmother died in June 2003, Win and William Butler's grandfather (swing musician Alvino Rey) in March 2004, and Richard Reed Parry's aunt in April 2004.
Preliminary recordings for Funeral were made during the course of a week in August 2003 at the Hotel2Tango in Montreal, Quebec, and the recording was completed later that year.
The album produced 5 singles. The most successful, "Rebellion (Lies)", peaked at #19 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Alternative Music Album. It received wide critical acclaim and topped many year-end lists. It was ranked eighth in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book The Top 100 Canadian Albums, and #2 on Pitchfork's 200 Top Albums of the 2000s.

In Rainbows is the seventh studio album by English alternative rock band Radiohead. It was first released on 10 October 2007 as a digital download, followed by a standard CD release in most countries during the last week of 2007. The album was released in North America on 1 January 2008. In Rainbows was Radiohead's first release after the end of their contract with EMI and the end of the longest gap between studio albums in their career.
In Rainbows was recorded in London, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Oxfordshire with producers Mark Stent and Nigel Godrich. Radiohead worked on In Rainbows for more than two years, beginning in early 2005. In between recording, the band toured Europe and North America for three months in mid-2006. The songwriting on In Rainbows was more personal than that on Radiohead's other albums, with singer Thom Yorke describing most tracks as his versions of "seduction songs". Radiohead incorporated a wide variety of musical styles and instruments on the album, using not only electronic music and string arrangements, but also pianos, celestes, and the ondes Martenot.
Days after announcing the album's completion, Radiohead released In Rainbows as a digital download that customers could order for whatever price they saw fit. Upon its retail release, In Rainbows entered the UK Album Chart and the U.S. Billboard 200 at number one; by October 2008, it had sold more than three million copies worldwide in both digital and physical formats. The album earned widespread critical acclaim, and was ranked as one of the best albums of 2007 by several publications. In 2009, the record won two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Special Limited Edition Package.

The xx (pronounced "the ex ex") is a Nu Gaze band from south west London, England, formed in 2005. Originally consisting of four 20 year olds, they met at Elliott School, notable for alumni including Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet. They were placed at number 6 in the 2009 NME The Future 50 list. Their debut album, xx, was released on Young Turks Records on 17 August 2009. Though the band had worked with both Diplo and Kwes., xx was produced by the band themselves and mixed by Jamie Smith and Rodaidh McDonald. They recorded the album in a small garage that was part of the XL studios, often at night, which contributed to the sleek, whispery nature of the album. The band have toured with The Big Pink and Micachu. Their single "Crystalised" was featured on iTunes (UK) as Single of the Week, starting from 18 August 2009. Their song "Intro" is also being used in a promotional commercial for the series Cold Case and Law & Order on the Dutch television network Net 5, and "VCR" was featured in a Lie to Me episode.
On 11 November 2009, it was confirmed that keyboardist Baria Qureshi left the band after missing several scheduled shows, citing exhaustion. She will not be replaced, and the band will continue as a three-piece.
xx is the first studio album by English indie rock band The xx. Produced by the group themselves, it was originally released by Young Turks Records on August 17, 2009 in the United Kingdom and was released on October 20 in North America. The album was recorded at XL studios West London between December 2008 and April 2009.
