This set, recorded live at <SPAN class=t_tag onclick=tagshow(event) href="tag.php?name=the">the</SPAN> Montreux Jazz Festival, features the pianist (who also plays a bit of soprano and adds his emotional voice to the proceedings) with his longtime altoist Carlos Ward, bassist Essiet Okun Essiet, drummer Don Mumford and vocalist Johnny Classens. <P align=left><STRONG><FONT color=teal>在南非开普顿出生的 Dollar Brand， 六零年初期因为抵抗白人种族隔离的政权，在一次黑人抗暴大屠杀后流亡欧洲，不定期于瑞士苏黎世的非洲酒吧中演出。由于妻子 Bea Banjamin 的积极，安排当时在欧洲巡回演出的 Duke Ellington 来酒吧听 Dollar Brand 演出，使Brand 因而受到 Duke 赏识。一九六二年，在 Duke 安排下，Dollar Brand 与 Duke Ellington 合作， 在巴黎录制唱片， 六五年 Brand至美国参加新港爵士音乐节，结识多位知名美国爵士乐手。<BR><BR>Dollar Brand的唱片多由欧洲唱片公司如英国的黑狮， 德国的 ECM，enja 与 tiptoe 等发行。 他的谱曲风格颇有 Duke Ellington 的丰富语汇，着重想像与变化， 演奏风格则受 Thelonious Monk 影响颇深，有一种浓厚的铜管音质况味。 然而，Dollar Brand 并不是一名只会模仿的音乐家，他的作品深受祖国 - 南非 - 这块土地的人物风情影响，作品中处处可见非洲音乐（以五音阶为主、重复但掷地有声的韵律）， 教堂福音诗歌（ Brand 祖父创立开普顿最大的浸信圣公教会）， 融合了 Brand 反思沉静的冥想特质，在强烈的左手节奏风格下，Brand 娓娓道来他对祖国强烈思念，他吟唱，他弹奏，流畅的钢琴旋律代表说不尽的乡愁。<BR><BR>Brand 在六零年尾改信回教，并更名为Abdullah Ibrahim。 他在接受访问时曾经指出，音乐一旦蒙上过度的商业色彩，就会使爵士乐手卷入市场的死胡同里，丧失自我追寻的目标。 宗教信仰是 Brand 的精神支柱，音乐则是他与自然沟通的媒介。他特别指出，音乐最原初的用途就是崇拜神的仪式，平日工作时的情感抒发，与人际之间交流的方式。任何音乐创作，若是抽离了自然与人的关系，便显得堕落而空洞。</FONT></STRONG></P></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></P>
