Avril Lavigne is the angsty singer-songwriter born in Canada in 1984. The tracks "Sk8er Boi" and "My Happy Ending" are among her best known.
Lavigne got her break in 1998 when she won a competition to sing on stage with Shania Twain. Having established a profile in Canada, she was invited to sing on the albums of Canadian folk singer Steve Medd. During this time she worked on material for her debut, Let Go, which she released in 2002. The album was an instant success, achieving record sales of 16 million worldwide and earning her the MTV Music Awards' Best New Artist title. Her follow-up albums were promoted, in part, by performing at shopping malls where she was able to reach out to her fans; the technique has proven to be a success.
She has written songs for films, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and Eragon, while her acting career has involved working on The Flock with Richard Gere and a number of other roles. Lavigne performed "Who Knows" at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy to promote the 2010 event to be held in Canada.
She does work with a variety of charities and causes including Amnesty International and the Make A Wish Foundation. Still in her early twenties, with combined record sales of 27 million, it looks like she has a long and successful career ahead of her.
