Now I don't know what others think, but I reckon Luciano's done many a good tune and many an excellent tune, but very few killers!

So it seems to my ears and based on the 6 or 7 albums I've got and what I've heard elsewhere.

However, without fail, I can always rely on a Luciano album if I want a listen to an enjoyable album.

UNITED STATES OF AFRICA is no exception.

It's up to the standard of the other albums I've bought in the past, there is a mix of tunes from the point of view of new rhythms, plus several rhythms and bass lines that wll be familiar to many.

...all exceed expectations - thoroughly enjoyable work outs.

Indeed, the last of those is built around a killer early 70s bass line (I'll not say which ) and works really well.

I WILL FOLLOW is an OK tune, while MOVING ON is over the ONLY A SMILE (Paragons) rhythm, so belts along in fine style.

MURDER AND THIEF
INVASION

...both continue the quality tunes and BE AWARE is a standard track - good on an album, but unlikely to set any dancefloors alight.

I can't get on with KING OF KINGS (yet), which seems to be a bit of a mess arrangement-wise and doesn't sound so good to my ears.

A NO LIKE WE NO LIKE THEM (like IN THIS RECESSION) has a classic killer bass line and is all the better for it.

UNITE AFRICA is a bright, uptempo number and one that I'll be liking more as I hear it.

NUBIAN QUEEN is another good, but good album track - can't fault it.

HOSANNA (like KING OF KINGS) doesn't do it for me yet either - rec0gnisable backing track that I can't place.

I don't go much on non-Reggae tunes, but I can quite enjoy Luciano's predilection for sometimes sticking on a spritual, almost hymnal ballad and ONLY JAH CAN SAVE US NOW is the one on show here.

It's OK, but I wouldn't choose to listen to it.

(Marley had much to answer for when he recorded the excellent REDEMPTION SONG)

The closer, ANOTHER TERRORIST ATTACK, is a belting track that's spiced up by Fantan Mojah's controbution.

As with any Reggae album, it needs to be played at a decent volume to feel the full "benefit".

I'd recommend it to Luciano fans as being up to the standard you'd expect, but I'd also recommend it to those not so familiar with his work, as there are some grand tracks, heavy enough rhythms, plus the "comfort" of several familiar rhythms and bass lines[/color][/b][/size]
