Album : Elysium Label : EAR Music
Description :
The seemingly perpetual intrigues between Timo
Tolkki and his old bandmates and the lamentable
Stratovarius (2005), made my interest in the
Finnish five drop to the absolute zero years
ago. The mediocre album Polaris (2009) could
not bring back any interest in Stratovarius: the
too simple song structures, the lower pace and
the absence of flashy guitar and keyboard duels
made that the band was not even a shadow of
their own past.
Forget the misery of recent years: with
'Elysium' Stratovarius is fully back! What has
brought the sudden transition of the five is
beyond me and honestly: I dont mind at all.
'Elysium' displays the sound and breathes the
familiar atmosphere we know from early
Stratovarius. All the above elements, which were
had vanished on their most recent releases, are
back in abundance. The band, with Kotipelto up
front, sounds fresh and driven, Jens Johansson's
keyboard has regained a lot of its
importantance and the many intros give the album
a lot of atmosphere. It is all reflected in
enjoyable tracks like Infernal Maze, The Game
Never Ends, the dazzyingly rapid Event
Horizon or the compelling Lifetime In A
Moment. Only the 18 minutes (!) long title
track is - because of his length - somewhat
difficult to consume.
'Elysium' is nothing less than the resurrection
of Stratovarius. Fans of 'Destiny' or 'Visions',
who have turned away from the band in the past
years, will probably not know what hit them when
listening to the album. Only those who start
enjoying the band because of their most recent
albums, might have some problems with the bans
returning to the sound of yesteryear. But in the
end they will not conclude otherwise than that
the new material is the most appealing that
Stratovarius has released in years.
