Even without hearing the sound of a banjo, the first note of Humbling Tides will remind you of Sufjan Stevens’s 2004 album Seven Swans. Then the fingerpicking starts, which brings to mind Nick Drake. Add a moody, spontaneous, neat little vocal and you begin to wonder if this is a folk album from yet another lonely white guy who spends his nights playing guitar at home and his days sitting with blank eyes by the sea. Take a look at the musical career of the man behind the music, however, and that notion is swiftly destroyed. French musician Yann Tambour was, once upon a time, known by the stage name Encre. It was during this period that he produced four electronic albums. Then, in 2005, he started a new project called Thee, Stranded Horse. This transformation saw him release Churning Strides, which combined the benefits of both neo-folk and neo-classical.

 This latest release, Humbling Tides, sees Tambour dropping the ‘Thee’ to become just Stranded Horse, and embracing an eclectic mix of English folk, West African polyrhythms and medieval ballads. Better yet is the inclusion of Mali’s superb Ballaké Sissoko on kora – specifically on the beautiful, fairy finale of ‘Shields’. It should not be forgotten that this is the instrument that convinced Tambour to change his electronic outlook and embrace folk. Violinist Carla Palone also appears on the album to support a baroque-style gloominess. Mostly written while Tambour was staying in Bristol, in the southwest of England, Humbling Tides offers a coastal grandness. Compared with the sometimes-self-pitying vocals and simple guitar chords of Churning Strides, this new album brings the artist’s scattered elements together into a much more coherent set.
