Emma-Lee Moss (born c. 1984), known by her stage name Emmy the Great, is a London-based singer-songwriter. Her debut album, First Love, was released February 9, 2009.
[b]Early life[/b]
Moss was born in Hong Kong to an English father and a Chinese mother. Being into music from a young age, she would take the train to her nearest Tower Records so that she could buy the only non-Chinese music they had and, as a result, she got into bands such as Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Lemonheads. While in Hong Kong, she attended primary school in Kowloon. She emigrated with her family to London at the age of 12 and grew up in the English Shires - at one point living in a canal boat in Oxford.
Talking about how her surroundings in England had affected her song writing, she claimed that, "All my songs are based in the English countryside, I never write about London because it doesn't inspire me. I like being here because I meet lots of people, but my heart is in the country. I want to be like Beatrix Potter and move to the Lake District to live with books and plants."
She attended the Michael Hall Rudolf Steiner School in West Sussex.
[b]Musical career[/b]
She was initially a member of the indie folk group Lightspeed Champion, performing as their vocalist for a brief period in 2007 alongside Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. She then started work as a solo artist and adopted the nickname Emmy the Great, which she says came about when "I wanted to be a backing singer and I wanted to have something to hand to people... ‘Emmy’ is a name they called me at university, which I hated, and ‘the Great’ I added on because I hated ‘Emmy’ so much." She formed a backing band which includes musicians such as Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband, Glenn Kerrigan of So Say So, Tom Rogerson of Three Trapped Tigers and Ric Hollingbery of Pengilly's.
Her debut single, Secret Circus, was released in April 2006.
She began writing her debut album, First Love, in "dilapidated studios" owned by The Earlies in rural Lancashire and was released in February 2009. It spawned the singles We Almost Had A Baby and First Love. The album was received with generally positive reviews, while The New York Times compiled their list of "Best Albums of the Year 2009" and ranked First Love at #7.
Her second album, Virtue, is due out on June 13, 2011. Moss said that, "It’s been a very strange few months, and I can’t wait to make a record of them".[10] On April 18, 2011, RCRD LBL released a free download of the track "Century Of Sleep" which is due to appear on her second album Virtue.

Each country has their own folk music, but the genre usually refers to American and British music that has been passed through the generations by oral tradition. It's simple, acoustic-based music that spins everyday events and common people into mythic status. Many traditional folksongs have no known author, they have simply evolved over the years. Most of the earliest recorded folk music was of this nature, but with Woody Guthrie, topical folk began making its way to record. Still, many artists, including the Weavers and Pete Seeger, chose to mix traditional songs with newer material, either written by the artists themselves or other contemporary musicians. Initially, Bob Dylan functioned in that style, but by his second album, =The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan,= he began relying entirely on original material, thereby ushering the modern era of folk, where most performers sang their own (usually personally and introspective) material, and only occasionally throwing in covers.
