With Clash of the Gods, long serving German metal band Grave Digger moves from Scottish Highlands to the ancient greek world. What hasn't changed is Grave Digger's commitment to traditional heavy and power metal. They've been doing it for better than 30 years with Clash of the Gods being their fifteenth album. (That's excluding, of course, the tragedy that was Stronger Than Ever as 'Digger.')
Grave Digger: mr. death seems a mere footnote.
If you purchased the Home at Last EP earlier this summer, you'll find that Clash of the Gods echoes some of that traditional heavy metal sound. But it also incorporates more of the speed/power metal side for which the band is well known. God of Terror, Helldog and Medusa, by example, all have there faster moments.
Conversely, Clash of the Gods, Call of the Sirens, and Home of the Last remind more of epic heavy metal, sometimes slower, but always deeper and grandiose. Death Angel and the Grave Digger blend speed with a catchy rock groove. Walls of Sorrow is a curious tune: mostly speed metal with an astonishingly harmonious vocal chorus.
I think the clan, Grave Digger's fans, will find Clash of the Gods satisfactory and entertaining as the band strays little from the metal which made them famous. Recommended.
