An exceptional live recording, “Concert In Athens”, the
tenth ECM release by Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou,
incorporates moving performances by guests Kim Kashkashian
and Jan Garbarek. The US violist and the Norwegian saxophonist
have each made important contributions to Karaindrou’s music
in the past, Garbarek with his playing on the film-score for
The Beekeeper (see Music for Films) and Kashkashian
as the key musical protagonist of Ulysses’ Gaze.
Themes of both those films are revisited here,
amongst much that is new. A primary emphasis is music
written for theatre: the wide-reaching emotional scope
of pieces for plays by Arthur Miller, Tennesee Williams
and Edward Albee provides a wonderful context for bringing
the guest musicians into contact with Eleni’s soloists,
above all the brilliant oboist Vangelis Christopoulos.
Recorded November 2010, with Manfred Eicher
as producer, “Concert in Athens” gives us perhaps the fullest picture
of Eleni Karaindrou’s compositional creativity to date.

the party that is the music industry with its
seminal debut, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, Guns N'
Roses released USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II. Thanks to
a reckless approach toward life and music, G N' R
was constantly at the center of controversy and
the result was that much of it was chronicled on
this two-volume project. By this time, original
drummer Steven Adler had been dismissed due to
alleged drug dependency problems and was replaced
by the Cult's Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed
was also added as a member.
ILLUSION I found Axl Rose ranting on songs about
being sued by a neighbor ("Right Next Door to
Hell"), dysfunctional relationships ("Back off
Bitch"), and a drug overdose ("Coma"). Amid all
the spewed bile, G N' R scored three Top 40 hits
with a Wings cover ("Live and Let Die"), a
piano-driven, Elton John-flavored epic ("November
Rain"), and a hard-edged ballad ("Don't Cry").
Celebrity cameos include a then unknown Shannon
Hoon, Hanoi Rocks' Mike Monroe, and Alice Cooper,
who makes a particularly sinister contribution to
"The Garden."

The unthinkable has happened: murmurs have surfaced that My Bloody Valentine
will finally be releasing a new album later this year, their first since
1991Æs consciousness-shattering Loveless. At least thatÆs what enigmatic
frontman Kevin Shields has hinted at. My Bloody ValentineÆs characteristic
manipulation of sound through guitars -- ranging from everything to violins
scraping the wrong note, to then strangely and beautifully coexisting with a
delay pedal-laden wall of sound -- has garnered them a well-deserved
notoriety, and we can only hope the rumors are true.
In the meantime, My Bloody Valentine has released a series of collections
cataloguing the almost thirty years theyÆve been active, including reissues of
Loveless and IsnÆt Anything, as well as a 24-track compilation consisting of
EPs and rarities previously only available through promos, and three
unreleased tracks. By definition reissues tend to be louder, and My Bloody
ValentineÆs EPs & Rarities is no exception. Yet it hits as intensely as when
you first heard them so many years ago. If not more.
Sonorous ôFeed Me With Your Kissö exhibits the lesser-heralded but equally as
competent noise rock capabilities of My Bloody Valentine, thumping bass
resounding like a heart beating frighteningly out of control. Equally as
provocative as the original, the exception stems from the thrashing guitars
glossing a bit too much over Butcher and ShieldsÆ vocals, becoming slightly
more muddled than usual. Heartbreakingly poignant ôCigarette In Your Bedö
still lingers with the bittersweet taste of a morning after, cold and
vulnerable. ôHoney Powerö paralyzes, ButcherÆs lovely vocals washed over an
ambience of shoegaze guitars.
The full-length version of ôGlider,ö a B-side on the ôSoonö ô12, masterfully
display ShieldsÆ finesse at crafting a hypnotic drone through the use of slide
guitar, oozing with a frenzy of delay pedals. ôInstrumental No 1ö is
deafening, punk rock in the truest sense of the word, while ôInstrumental No
2ö drifts off into a hazy world of haunting vocal loops and tight, solid
drumming.
The three previously unreleased tracks, ôAngel,ö ôHow Do You Do Itö and ôGood
For Youö soar, more distortion-driven with the likes of fellow friends the
Jesus and Mary Chain and less shoegazey than Loveless. ButcherÆs vocals
seamlessly complement an array of compressed guitars on ôAngel,ö a lofi
æ90s-esque track sounding like a flawless precursor to grunge. ôHow Do You Do
Itö paints a dizzying varnish comprised of ShieldsÆ pleading vocals, tense
drumming and roaring shoegaze guitars, while ôGood For Youö places the
listener in a trance of delicious distortion.
EPs & Rarities is less a compilation, more a catalogue of the scattered,
varied emotions that My Bloody Valentine manages to embrace with their varied
work. My Bloody Valentine has the unparalleled ability to establish a
universality within their listeners, resulting in a timelessness that few
bands can achieve.

There are two types of great records û those that change the world, and those
that are just plain perfect in every way. My Bloody ValentineÆs Loveless is
the latter. After allegedly bankrupting Creation, the bands label, and taking
three years to make, Loveless was finally released in 1991. Conceived on a
strict diet of sex and sleep deprivation and sounding like nothing anyone had
ever heard before, it took the Spectoresque noisepop of the Jesus and Mary
Chain and refined it into a new sound û one that would come to be known as
shoegaze.
After twenty-one years with no new record, but one reunion tour just a few
years ago under their belts, My Bloody Valentine are back with the long
awaited versions of their albums IsnÆt Anything, Loveless, and a compilation
of their many EPs all remastered by the bandÆs frontman, songwriter, producer,
and overall genius in Kevin Shields. Such is ShieldÆs perfectionism that two
remasters of Loveless are being released û one from the original tape and
another from the ╜ inch analogue tapes.
You first realise Loveless is like nothing youÆve ever heard before in your
life about a second into the albumsÆ opening track, Only Shallow. Walls and
layers of swirling, drowning guitars fill the speakers. The remastered version
takes this to another level, with the two guitar tracks sounding more
distinct, and thus more together than ever before. Where Only Shallow started
as a clustered wall of noise, the remastered version only builds this wall
higher.
Moving on from Only Shallow, the next few tracks blend together like the
ingredients of the tastiest sandwich youÆve ever eaten. The reverb-heavy
Loomer, the almost droning, minute-long Touched, and one of the high points of
the album To Here Knows When. With Bilinda ButcherÆs dreamy vocals and almost
non-existent lyrics with Kevin Shieldsæ masterminded guitars itÆs easy to get
lost to the sound of Loveless.
As Loveless goes on, through When You Sleep and I Only Said, a track stacked
sky high with the bands trademark layers and reverb to Come in Alone, Bilinda
ButcherÆs finest point vocal-wise. The next song however, is the bittersweet
Sometimes as heard in Lost in Translation. To call Sometimes a masterpiece
would be an understatement. Managing to sound both raw and blissful, angry and
easy, noisy and soft, the sound of the plectrum picking the strings is clearly
heard underneath the distortion. Sometimes provides five minutes of blissed
out noisy dreampop.
If IÆve hit a number of clichΘs during the writing of this review, itÆs
because there are often no other words to describe what Shields was doing
during the production of Loveless û so unique are the tricks of his trade that
you have to use words like æswirlingÆ or ædreamyÆ to describe the sound.
Sometimes follow ups, Blown a Wish and What You Want fit these descriptions
perfectly, carrying on the sound that makes Loveless so distinctive and
wonderful. ItÆs the albumÆs closer Soon, however, that puts the icing on the
cake - a seven minute long collage of guitars and synths, backed by Colm
OÆClosoigÆs almost polyrythmic drumming, making Soon seem almost like a dance
track.
So how does the remaster of Loveless compare to the original? Louder, more
distinctive and much more powerful the remastered versions (both of them,
remember) take Loveless and make it sound brand new all over again. Loveless
was the best album of all time BEFORE it was remastered, and itÆs the best
album of all time after.

[color=Red]Timed to coincide with Joni Mitchell’s 70th birthday[/color], Tierney Sutton’s career-spanning homage has actually been marinating for more than a dozen years, ever since she heard Mitchell’s standards-focused Both Sides Now from 2000. It was, writes Sutton in her liner notes, “my doorway into Joni-land,” prompting a deep dive into the Mitchell oeuvre. But Sutton was adamant that she wouldn’t record any Mitchell tunes until she felt fully ready and able. Fortuitously, members of the Turtle Island Quartet approached her in 2011 to suggest a collaboration that, they hoped, might include some Joni material.
It is her first-ever album without bandmates Christian Jacob, Ray Brinker and Trey Henry (though bassist Kevin Axt does make a guest appearance), Sutton instead working alongside Turtle Island and in various combinations with flutist Hubert Laws, guitarist Serge Merlaud, keyboardist Larry Goldings and drummers Peter Erskine and Ralph Humphrey.
There is a natural kinship between Mitchell and Sutton. They’ve shaped similarly distinctive styles by embracing a cool California sensibility while remaining loyal to their unfussy roots—so it comes as no surprise that the supple, haunting Sutton emerges as a peerless Mitchell interpreter. From a gorgeously diaphanous “Blue” and sly “Big Yellow Taxi” to a loose-limbed “The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines” and boplicious “Be Cool” alongside Al Jarreau, plus a wily interweaving of “Free Man in Paris” and “April in Paris,” After Blue is a towering achievement.
