韋根庭(麥迪文飾)是個自我率性的孤兒，雖然擁有驚人記憶力和數學天份，但性格不羈，不肯面對現實而甘於平凡度日，終日與朋友查理(賓亞佛力飾)混在一起，以兼職維生，生活陷入「蒲吧、打鬥、被捕、上庭」的公式。一次，韋根庭被控傷人，一心想提拔他的大學教授林保將他保釋，條件是韋根庭須定期跟他研習數學，並接受心理轉導。不過，韋根庭沒有因而改過。直至遇上跟林保亦敵亦友的桑恩教授(羅賓威廉斯飾)後，韋根庭的人生觀才改變過來。桑恩教授本身原來也因為喪妻而陷入長期傷痛之中。在輔導韋根庭的過程中，桑恩與韋根庭由最初的對峙，轉化成互相啟發的友誼。韋根庭亦因而學懂如何打開心窗、實踐真我……。
