[size=2][color=olive][b]Trying to accurately convey the sound of The Maple State is a task that is much more difficult than it should be. Some will slap the Manchester band with the now ridiculous, all-encompassing emo tag, while others will insist their racket is indie-rock influence by the likes of The Get Up Kids and Death Cab For Cutie. Those who are bothered about pigeon-holing are missing the point entirely: 'Say, Scientist' is a stunning release that will find fans in anyone who enjoys rock music.
Opener 'We Swear By The Light Life' is exemplary of the five tracks that follow it, with smart lyrics and gingerly plucked guitar set to a pounding beat. The band demonstrate an uncanny knack for perfectly straddling romantic, personal visions with music that is anything but soft. There may be a few tender tales scattered throughout 'Say, Scientist', but none of them are miserable affairs. The title track finds frontman Greg Counsell sat outside in the cold at a party full of strangers, yet fairly content with watching satellites in the sky.
'Don't Take Holidays' is a bitter pop-punk piece with scathing lyrics for a worthless lover, featuring the memorable line "It doesn't matter what your doctors say, because they don't have to live with you". Further on, 'Starts With Dean Moriarty (Bad Sign)' is a song of pure frustration, chronicling the struggle of finding a worthy job and living an independent lifestyle. It's definitely a record of ideals - some that are attainable and others that are quixotic dreams.
The most appealing element of 'Say, Scientist' is the way in which The Maple State come across as painstakingly genuine. There's no ulterior message to be found here, but there is a sincerity that grounds the band to the same down-to-earth level of their listeners. This is strongest on the highlight track, 'Temperate Lives', a slow-burning Brand New-esque anthem that becomes more rewarding with every spin. The song details the beginning of writing a record, from initially positive thoughts on subject matter, to slowly realising that everything is "not so fucking chipper". It's essentially an acknowledgement of the listener, and equally of The Maple State's earnestness. Final track 'You And Me And An X-Ray Machine' begins with the somber "There's an army of thieves out there waiting for me/they'll take what they want/leave my bones in the street" and continues with sparse guitars and cascading drums. Pregnant with a smooth spookiness akin to standing in a dimly lit car park at 4am, it rounds everything off nicely and provokes a reflection on what has come before it. The conclusion of that reflection is that 'Say, Scientist' never feels like a bunch of tracks sewn together, but rather a collection of individual songs that complement each other naturally as a whole.
If The Maple State continue to hold the listener close, this promising British troupe may find themselves with a reputation to live up to in future releases. With songs as cracking as those displayed here though, that's a situation that shouldn't present too many difficulties. Hopeless romantics rejoice, The Maple State may well be the band you fall in love with this year.
