1996年夏天，Nas带着《It Was Written》回来了，相比《Illmatic》时期的凶猛，这时的Nas多了一些成熟和圆滑，正如封面上的照片由小孩子变成了青年。
专辑的Intro开了一个好头，在清凉的旋律下，Nas和AZ展开了对话，接下来就是旋律优美、讨论人生的“The Message”，我们来看看当时23岁的Nas给我们带来了什么样的“信息”吧：

那句“fake thug, no love”引起的2Pac之间的争端是后话，接下来的“Street Dreams”采用了和2Pac“All Eyez On Me”完全一样的采样，Nas这么做无疑是欠缺深思熟虑的。但“Street Dreams”这首歌对一个渴望成功的年轻人的心境刻画得非常到位，MV也选择了拉斯维加斯作为拍摄地点。
接下来的“I Gave You Power”应该算是专辑中构思最为独特的一曲。Nas从一支手枪的角度通过第一人称来完成了这首歌曲。其中第3段的叙事尤其精彩。DJ Premier简约而不失水准的制作也很好的渲染了忧伤的气氛。

其后的“Watch Dem Niggas”里Nas描述了街头的残酷，如同在Hook处提到的“Watch dem niggas that be close to you/And make sure they do what they supposed to do/Cause you know they be thinkin about smokin you/Never personal, nowadays, it's the ways”。背景里略带G Funk风味的舒缓节拍不得不让人怀疑这是不是在为了取悦听众。
在接下来的几首歌里Nas展示了他在麦克风前惊人的杀伤力，一连串眼花缭乱的引用以及精妙到位的flow更加肯定了他“街头诗人”的称号。值得一提的是在这里Nas也显露出了一些向Mafioso Rap过渡的倾向，在由团队The Firm表演的“Affirmative Action”中AZ，Cormega，Nas以及Foxy Brown更是轮番开火，大谈黑手党文化。奢华的Beat更是很好的配合了歌曲的内容，装点出华贵的气质。

Cormega这段作为他在团队中的唯一一次公开亮相也值得被人记住。
紧接着，Nas在“The Set Up”里向我们叙述一次他的复仇行动，Nas再次证明了他的作词能力，Havoc制作的Beat也足够凶狠。“Black Girl Lost”在一段电话声中开始，一个女孩在抱怨着乏味的“Back To Africa Shit”，她们更加热衷于那些热闹的舞会以及金光闪闪的珠宝，Nas在这里指责了这些丢失灵魂的女孩，她们会沦为Bitches更多的是由于自己的贪婪与无知。（这句是笔者说的不是Nas说的）
专辑最后的部分中最出色的要数“Shootouts”，在这里Nas作为一个第3者来描述了他所看到的一切，街道上充斥着毒贩子，警察，告密者，监视器，捎有动作就会被逮捕。人们眼里只有钱，街上时刻可能发生枪战。这就是QB，这就是Dirty New York。
琅琅上口的副歌以及比较“正面”的歌词都证明了结尾处与Lauryn Hill合作的“If I Rule The World”是首不错的打榜歌曲，这也体现出了Nas所做出的改变。
从整张专辑来看它实在没有什么太大的瑕疵，这应该算是张很规矩的主流说唱专辑了。我们可以看出Nas的用心，他既保持了从前的街头的成分，也合理的加入了一些Mafioso的成分（要知道在95年Rakwon的《OB4CL》根本是火疯了）。同时，制作团队Trackmasters也付出了足够多的努力来让电台来注意Nas，而且Dr.Dre的加盟更是吸引了无数眼球。这些恐怕都是Nas在《Illmatic》中吸取的“教训”，但在我们看来这显然并没有太多必要的。将《It Was Written》拿来与《Illmatic》做比较无疑是让人遗憾的，毕竟这时候他已经改名叫Nas Escobar，而不是那个Nasty Nas了。但不可否认的，这仍然是张出色的专辑，至少到现在为止Nas还不曾发表过超越《It Was Written》的作品。

#2 N.Y.State Of Mind 5/5
说Nas通过这首歌夺得了自己的街头诗人的桂冠，毫不为过。在Premo打造的强硬的、充满大都市黑暗街头感觉的beat下，Nas向我们展示了他是一个敏锐的观察者。

这样的歌词足以向人们宣告Nasty Nas就是新一代的Rakim！当然最经典的还是那句"I never sleep,cause sleep is the cousin of death"，相信Nas对这句也甚为满意，在后来的作品里还数次提到。
通过这首歌Nas也向人们展示了他对黑手党文化的痴迷，预示了之后“The Firm”的组成。
#3 Life's a Bitch 5/5
听过强硬的“ Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames.N.Y.State Of Mind”就到了悠扬的"Life's A Bitch"，简短的intro后专辑中唯一的客串AZ出场，这段行云流水的verse成功抢掉Nas的风头，也促使AZ成为传奇人物。

Nas那句"I'm out for dead presidents to represent me"后来被Jay-Z采样，也成为他们之间斗争的一个由头。除此之外，Pete Rock和Nas的一问一答“Whose world is this?”"The world is yours"以及采样T La Rock的声音“It's Yours”已经成为最经典的过门之一。

其实"Halftime"是一首1992年就已在《Zebrahead》原声带中出现的歌曲，但仍被选为《Illmatic》的单曲之一，Nas的伯乐之一Large Professor制作了这首歌，在悠扬的旋律和强硬的鼓点下，Nas迸发出巨大的能量，不断的妙语让听者完全无法安坐。

又是眼花缭乱的歌词，相比"N.Y.State Of Mind"，Premo在这首歌里带来了稍柔和的采样。Nas怀念着离开自己身边的朋友，充满了悲凉的气氛。在第二段他对生活提出了这样的疑问。
One for the money
Two for pussy and foreign cars
Three for Alize niggaz deceased or behind bars
I rap divine Gods check the prognosis, is it real or showbiz?
整首歌意味深长，在结束部分DJ Premier跟随Nas的念白“The most dangerous MC is..”不断地刮擦“Comin' Outta Queensbridge”，在依依不舍中本曲结束。
#7 One Love 5/5
由A Tribe Called Quest首脑Q-Tip打造，整首歌的主题像是一封给自己关在监狱里的兄弟们的公开信，鼓励他们抬起头来，真挚的感情是这首歌最大的特点其中提到的Cormega最后跟Nas闹翻，但这时他们的友情却是所有人都看到的。
#8 One Time For Your Mind 4.5/5
这首歌是专辑中唯一受到过不佳评论的作品，相比其他伟大的8首歌，这首确实稍逊一筹，Large Professor制作的这首歌里，Nas把说唱的速度放慢了，谈到自己的思想和生活状态，还是有这样的“I wreck shit so much, the microphone'll need a paint job”的佳句。
#9 Represent 5/5
又是Premo，气势澎湃的beat下Nas带来了一首完美的battle track，过门处众人大喊“Represent！”也是当时的流行程式之一，Nas给听众献上了极其富含street wise的歌词，勾画出一副栩栩如生的Queensbridge街头生活的图画。

又一首难以置信的作品，Large Professor采样了Michael Jackson的“Human Nature”，并把它变得很jazzy，Nas再次展示了自己的歌词技巧，像这样的段落让人激赏不已。
