Lovers Electric is an immensely creative Australian duo comprised of David Turley and Eden Boucher. Nashvillians may recognize Eden's surname, as she is the sister of singer/songwriter Butterfly Boucher. Last year, Lovers Electric came to the United States for a handful of U.S. dates that included stops in Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles. I was fortunate enough to see their memorable Nashville set at The Basement. Since this brief U.S. tour, Lovers Electric have toured Europe as the supporting act for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), most of which were sold-out shows.
Lovers Electric has just released their debut full-length record Whatever You Want, a stellar collection of 80's inspired energetic synth-pop reminiscent of early Berlin. The songs are crisply driven by Eden's forceful yet sugar-sweet vocals, while David assists on guitar, piano, and backing vocals. Whatever You Want is a fully produced masterpiece that harkens back to the dark alternative dance clubs of the late 80's. Every song is hook-heavy with intelligently written lyrics about love, passion, heart-break, and hope. Listening to Whatever You Want will make you long for a place to go express yourself on a strobe-lit dance-floor. Still, there is an elegant organic touch in these songs that shines a continuous spotlight on Lovers Electric's outstanding songwriting abilities. The credits indicate that the lyrics and music are a collaborative effort, and David and Eden are a force to be reckoned with. Whatever You Want is a gem, appealing to both the new indie-rock scene and 80's kids who grew up on the brat pack.
No tour dates are posted yet, but expect a return trip to the United States in support of this new full-length record. When they do make it back, let's hope for a full-band show, as the record's outstanding production deserves to be matched live. Regardless, expect a visually stimulating presentation, as Eden's fashion-design expertise is always tastefully infused into their stage clothes.
