Although there's something of the archly raised eyebrow about Mr Yen, it would be a mistake to write him off as a Mike Flowers Pops wannabe. For a start, despite the whiff of irony that permeates his debut album, each track here is performed dead straight, with so much confidence that you'd swear he'd been doing the rounds for years.
Opener Girl Number One gets the album off to the sort of flying start that Usain Bolt would be proud of, a big, happy, sparkling gem of a track that sounds like the love child of Neil Hannon and Pet Shop Boys. Even the chorus' uneasy lurch into reggae/ska can't stop it being a truly great pop song.
Yen's voice is smooth and rich, giving even the weaker songs on here a depth and texture. The Divine Comedy comparisons are unavoidable, but he also fits squarely into the tradition of great English vocalists: there are hints of Jarvis Cocker, Damon Albarn and even that adopted Englishman Scott Walker at times.
Each track here is beautifully arranged, almost ridiculously perky and as catchy as a tropical disease. You can imagine songs like MOR and The Song Applies To You blasting from shop windows and cars, guaranteed to raise a smile in these grim, recession laden times.
