Release Notes:
You may recall Shoreline from their incredible 10" debut on the Yesternow label
a couple of years back - surely one of the most overlooked and treasured
releases of its kind in the last couple of years. The Brighton-based ensemble
combined a traditional Brit-folk aesthetic with a songwriting flair in line with
the big American names who cropped up around the same time, giving traditional
acoustic music a modern restyling complete with beautifully detailed
arrangements and a lively 'collective' feel. This album seems to have been a
long time coming, but now it's finally with us the band's sound remains fresh
and vivacious, characterised by great production, elaborate and nuanced
arrangements, plus of course, utterly memorable songwriting. 'Daybreak' is a
fitting opener, setting the band within a context that's a little less
pronouncedly upbeat and chirpy than their 10". Perhaps this slight shift is an
indication of the band having developed and matured since last we encountered
them, and certainly the likes of the brass and string adorned 'Seabird', or the
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy-like 'Heather' suggest a real step forward in all
respects. Fans of the band's first wave of material will be pleased to find
'Kings' and 'Shipwrecked' making welcome appearances in a re-recorded form, the
latter of which draws the album to a close in a gorgeous eight minutes of rich
vocal harmonies and Sufjan Stevens-style instrumental configurations. Wonderful
music.
