The band has been around since the 1990s, but did not actually evolve into its current form until 2002. Their music was described as "familiar not exotic, heavy not funky, direct, not sophisticated, sensual but not soulful, unrelenting".

The band released their first full-length album entitled From One in October, 2002, containing songs from their demo. Ra released their second album, Duality, that featured a new side of the band, portraying a duality between fear and love. The tracks are divided into two sections, each preluded by a short intro. Before the CD's release, drummer Skoota Warner left the band and did not accompany them on their April/May 2005 tour. The replacement drummer is current band member, Andy Ryan.

The band left Universal Records and signed with Cement Shoes Records. The label also features bands such as Godhead, Lo Mass Republic, and Ill Nino. In October, Ra released their third album entitled Raw, which includes 11 live tracks and one new studio track. The band has finished making their third studio album, Black Sun. An article can be found revealing more about Black Sun in the April issue of Metal Edge magazine. The album is currently downloadable on itunes. The song "Broken Hearted Soul" from Black Sun was downloadable on Christmas day of 2007.

Black Sun is the third studio album from the hard rock band Ra. While hopes were to release the album in June, the band's website raband.net states the release date as September 23rd, 2008. A single, Broken-Hearted Soul, from Black Sun was released Christmas Day 2007. It was available for download only on the band's myspace page and is now available on iTunes as of June 17, 2008. (no reference) Black Sun was released to iTunes on September, 16 2008. Some retailers do not carry this album due to distribution problems (unverified). The album reached #199 on the Billboard 200. Black Sun has sold 4400+ albums.
