Release Notes:

The Boxer Rebellion formed after a meeting between
Tennessee guitarist and lead vocalist Nathan
Nicholson and Australian guitarist Todd Howe in
London. This globally-minded inception is a major
foreshadow of the news that the band will be
iTunes Global Single of the Week starting
January 13th, meaning every iTunes outlet around
the world will host their song Evacuate as a free
download. The band s sound doesn t hail them from
one particular corner of the world or another, but
is a pleasant compromise of the members various
influences

Union is The Boxer Rebellion s sophomore effort and
one being released four years after their initial
debut. The band went through a rough patch and
much-needed hiatus after some medical emergencies
right before a tour with The Killers. Amazingly
the band has been able to bounce back and
confidently release an album with depth and growth
evident on it. It s quite an example of fortitude
to budding and veteran musicians alike

The sound of the band is a combination of the heavy
guitars of Interpol, a Radiohead aura and
presentation, and a little Coldplay-like riffs on
top. I would even go as far to say that they hold a
few comparisons to The Killers as well, but The
Boxer Rebellion s sound is not as full of steroids
as the Las Vegas band. Nicholson s lead vocals are
grounded and captivating to the listener, and the
band lets on no desire to glam up, but remains
closer to the folk side of the line when pressed

The album begins with pounding bass drums and an a
cappella first verse that is gently joined by
guitars and eventual harmonies. The Boxer Rebellion
likes to climb a mountain in its music, starting
low and relatively simple and careful manner
building it into a bigger and fuller sound. It s a
delicate process they excel at

The single Evacute is a definite highlight to the
album. It s a dark sounding song without being too
depressing, and is still mostly danceable to those
who look for that. It s an excellent representation
of the album. Nicholson s vocals are perfectly
strained and even exasperated, reflecting the
nature of the lyrics. The following track Soviets
starts out a lovely acoustic contrast ballad that
builds into some quasi-primitive drum work (perhaps
an example of the global make-up of the band) and
continues to gain momentum following the band s
precedence

Another must-listen of the album is The Gospel of
Goro Adachi , which has a nice groove to it; a
hypnotizing backbeat, muted keyboards, and chorus
of counter lyrics make it a very blissful piece
This is essentially the overall message of The
Boxer Rebellion, a relaxing and yet honest journey
of emotions

The Boxer Rebellion s Union isn t too loose or too
forward it s a very pleasant and refreshing
median that is a difficult compromise to make in
music. Because of this The Boxer Rebellion may or
may not make strides in the mainstream with Union
but it s certainly not a bad end product. They ve
crafted some compelling songs that make it worth a
repeated visit or two
