Marvin Gaye (1939-1984) 的一生充滿傳奇,出生在一個嚴厲的基督教家庭,父親擔任神職人員, 3歲便在教堂的詩歌班裡擔任獨唱的重職,由於父親生性保守, Marvin Gaye 從小在教鞭下長大,高中畢業後加入美國空軍,退伍後回到老家華盛頓,在當地一些 doo wop 樂團擔任主唱,在 Bo Diddley 的賞賜下,於 1950 後期發行單曲,開始在美國巡迴表演, 1961 年當他們到底特律時,被 Berry Gordy 相中,將他簽到自己旗下的唱片公司 Motown – 史上最傳奇的黑人音樂廠牌.受到 Sam Cooke 的影響,日後 Marvin Gaye (本名是 Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr.) 也將自己的名字字尾加上"e”,成為自己的藝名.Marvin Gaye 在 Motown 遇到 Smokey Robinson,他們一起工作,後來與 Berry Gordy 的姊妹 Anna 相識並且結婚. Marvin Gaye 在 Motown 發行許多專輯,創造自己音樂生涯的最高峰,也是 Motown 旗下最重要的藝人之一.
1971 年 Marvin Gaye 在 Motown 發行流行音樂史上最重要的專輯之一"What’s Going On",這張專輯在發行前曾遭到 Berry Gordy 阻撓,原因是專輯內容針對美國藥物氾濫,政治腐敗,還有政府對越戰的處理方式搖擺不定表達看法,這與當時只著重於男歡女愛的 R&B 音樂有很大的出入.後來還是證明這張唱片禁得起時間考驗,[color=Red]滾石雜誌將這張唱片列為史上最重要 500 張專輯的第 6 名[/color],僅次於 Beatles, Bob Dylan與 The Beach Boys,卻是所有黑人音樂專輯中名次最高的,當他唱著"What’s Going On”時,其真摯深情的聲音,令人為之動容,生活在紛紛擾擾的社會環境下,我們需要時常內省,自己能帶給這個環境什麼 ? 而什麼又才是我們真正需要的 ?
Marvin Gaye's What's Going On may be the most powerful soul record ever made. On this Deluxe Edition, the original recording is embellished with an alternate Detroit Mix of the album (which is almost equally strong) and a previously unreleased recording of Gaye's live performance at the Kennedy Center in 1972. It also includes brilliant liner notes, song lyrics, and a mini-essay by Smokey Robinson, who calls What's Going On his favorite album of all time. The raw emotionality of the live disc further demonstrates Gaye's commitment to his own sentiments and captures the longing and sadness that permeate the album. Gaye went into uncharted R&B territory on What's Going On: leaving love ballads behind, he explored social commentary from an intimate personal perspective. The world weighed heavy on his heart, and the album brings home the confusion of the Vietnam era, when America the Beautiful began to seem a bit ugly. Armed with only his heart and his voice, Marvin Gaye took on Uncle Sam, and won over the hearts of many Americans.
