Esthero's sound characteristically features her voice over a mix of mellow bass lines, jazzy trumpets, Spanish guitar and hip-hop. She is sometimes compared to artists Bj?rk, Portishead and Sade . Later artists who count Esthero among their influences include Res, Fergie and fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado.

Esthero's brother, Jason Englishman, is also a musician.

Breath from Another is singer-songwriter Esthero's full-length debut album. The album was released on April 28, 1998 and received positive critical reviews, but sold poorly.

At one of her concerts, Esthero said that the only track she still listens to is "Swallow Me".[citation needed] Despite its commercial failure, the seminal album is now generally considered a Trip-Hop classic.
