Detroit sextet Electric Six has been pumping out disco-infused rock track
since their debut single "Danger! High Voltage" in 2003. Since that time the
band has released pretty much an album a year; they keep up that torrent pace
with their sixth album, Kill.
The album's opening track and first single "Body Shot" is perhaps one of the
best of Electric Six's career. The track is more dance oriented with little
rock input but lead singer, Dick Valentine puts on a classic performance. His
vocal-style ranges from a gritty-growl to sex-crazed falsetto.
My favorite track on the album is "The Newark Airport Boogie". It is the
band's first foray into auto-tune but the effect only enhances the track's
uninhibited giddiness. And how many auto-tune tracks also include gang
vocals? Not many. With a hint of 8-bit Nintendo keyboards in the background
and lines like "It doesn't matter how you turn it on just turn it on/50
million screaming Chinamen just can't be wrong" its an instant E6 classic.
In respect to their entire catalog, Kill is definitely one of Electric Six's
most cohesive pieces of work. The band has suffered with filler and duds on
previous album, but Kill definitely cuts down on both. The result is one of
their strongest efforts to date.
