A massive amount of work from French maestro Franck Pourcel -- one of the most popular leaders of the mainstream easy scene of the 60s and early 70s -- and a strong proponent of mixing heavy strings with groovier rhythms!
The bulk of the set focuses on Pourcel's hits for Capitol/EMI in the 60s and 70s -- a range of tunes that are often done with full string backings, lush orchestrations, and a warmly romantic sound that was the key European contribution to easy listening in the postwar years.
The 4CD package features 25 tunes on each disc -- each broken up into themes that include Golds Of The 20th Century (Pourcel versions of famous pop tunes), From Cannes To Hollywood (film themes), French Fiddlers Super Lounge (traditional French and chanson numbers), and Classics Forever (classical themes, turned into pop instrumentals!) Most of this work has never been on CD before, and the package is a great introduction to Pourcel's work!
Franck Pourcel (11 August 1913 in Marseille - 12 November 2000) was a musician of the lounge or easy listening genre.
His father, a musician in the navy in Marseille, started teaching him music when he was 6 years old. Pourcel studied violin at the Conservatoire in Marseille, but also drums because he loved jazz. He led several jazz ensembles, including the French Fiddlers. Then he spend a year in Paris at the Conservatoire.
French violinist Franck Pourcel is best-known for his jazzy string arrangements of pop hits, as well as his lush easy listening arrangements and film scores.
