此片改編自小說《Bid Time Return》，作者理察麥瑟森 (Richard Burton Matheson)在小說的前序中坦言，一次他與家人的旅行途中，偶然在維吉尼亞城的一家歌劇院門口看到一張海報，那是已故美國著名女演員茉德亞當斯 (Maude Adams) 的海報，在那一剎那，他愛上了她，而《Somewhere In Time》中那段動人的故事也因此產生了。
