Release Notes:
Acclaimed vocalist Madeleine Peyroux is back with a new
captivating sound. Standin' On The Rooftop signals a major
sonic shift for Peyroux, as she explores American roots
music with a delicate touch and haunting resonance. The
new album, out on Emarcy/Decca and helmed by noted
producer Craig Street (Norah Jones, k.d. Lang, Cassandra
Wilson), features Marc Ribot on guitar/banjo along with
Me'shell Ndegeocello on bass and signals a new approach
for Peyroux as she carries her jazz sensibilities into
rootsier territory. Standin' On The Rooftop includes a
gorgeously melancholic folk rendition of The Beatles'
"Martha, My Dear," and the eerie, intimate new original
song "The Things I've Seen Today," which Peyroux co-wrote
with vocalist/violinist Jenny Scheinman. In addition to
contributions from Ribot and Ndegeocello, the tracks
feature drummer Charely Drayton (Neil Young, Johnny Cash)
and guitarist Chris Bruce (Seal, John Legend). Standin' On
The Rooftop, her fifth solo album, encompasses a wide
spectrum from the lulling, gentle "Lay Your Sleeping Head,
My Love" (adapted from the W.H. Auden poem of the same
name) and the stunning, spare "Super Hero" to the clever,
whimsical "Don't Pick a Fight With a Poet."
