Katie Melua生於前蘇聯的喬治亞共和國，成長於莫斯科、黑海、北愛爾蘭及倫敦。小時夢想可以從政或成為史學家的她，就讀英國表演藝術學校時被名音樂製作人Mike Batt（陳美、棒辣妹）慧眼發掘，簽入獨立廠牌DRAMATICO旗下。2003年底，首支單曲"The Closest Thing To Crazy"甫發行便強登英國金榜Top 10。不久，廣獲好評的首張專輯一舉擠下英倫人氣天后Dido/蒂朵、擊退Norah Jones/諾拉瓊斯，榮獲6週英國金榜后座，成為英國2004開春迄今最暢銷專輯。
