電影原著《野性的呼喚》(The Call of the Wild) 被譽為美國經典文學名著，二十世紀百大英文小說之一。這個由美國作家 Jack London於1903 年創作的短篇故事，最初是在《The Saturday Evening Post 》雜誌連載，其後出版成書大受歡迎，翻譯成47種語言，感動全球億萬讀者。
故事由原本生活於美國南部加州的混種狗巴克 (Buck) 展開，原本生活無憂，卻遭偷走販賣，輾轉流落到嚴寒極地充當雪橇犬，在弱肉強食的世界，聰敏又勇敢的巴克也漸漸學會適者生存的法則。在一次危難中遇上最後的主人約翰科頓（夏里遜福 飾），一人一狗經歷重重險阻互相扶持，巴克雖然對主人忠心耿耿，但原始的野性一直受到荒野狼群的叫聲所召喚，堅持守護主人的巴克，不料竟要面對生命中最重大轉變……
