This enterprising and very well played budget CD offers the perfect way to collect all of the major French violin sonatas by the great French composers who only wrote one of them. The exception here is Saint-Saëns, who wrote more, but the real musical interest centers around the sonatas by Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc. Kang is a first-rate violinist who has made several successful recordings for Naxos, and Devoyon partners him perfectly, as well he should, being in his native element. None of these sonatas is particularly long, and each of them contains music uniquely characteristic of its composer. Purely on musical grounds this disc is hard to beat, and the price only adds to the attraction. --David Hurwitz
