1989 年，Martika 演唱了《Toy Soldiers》 ，曾在美国 Billboard 排行榜上位列第五。当年 Martika 在美国流行乐界名噪一时，有人称她为”麦当娜第二”，可惜她于九十年代初结婚，以后就退出了乐坛。1980 年代，由于 MTV 台的堀起，利用影像结合音乐的新趋势营销，让一些色艺双全的新生代歌手，有了绝佳的表演新舞台，在 80 年代后期开始由 Tiffany、 Debbie Gibson 揭开 Teen 偶像歌手爆红的滥觞，到后期的 Tommy Page 等，为这一波青少年偶像狂潮惊艳全球乐坛做了最精采的诠释。其中，拥有古巴血统的音乐才女玛蒂卡（Martika）更是其中最受人瞩目的一位新巨星。这位年仅 19 岁的年轻女孩在 1988 年以一首轻快的电子舞曲《More Then You Know》空降全美排行榜，随即以反毒广告单曲《Toy Soldiers》冲上冠军宝座并蝉连2周冠军。乘胜追击的第二张专辑《Martika’s Kitchen》更是邀到歌坛鬼才 Prince 跨刀，为其制作首支单曲《Love…Thy Will Be Done》。同时，Martika 更将演艺触角延伸，开始参与《Wiseguy》等电影演出。
